The Pikeman At Corfe Castle

This was a composite that got shelved for a while - think it's now finished. I liked the colours more than composition really. It depicts Corfe Castle some time after the defeated siege and subsequent unsuccessful attempt to raise it to the ground. All that happened around 1647 when Lady Bankes made a defiant stand against the Parliamentarians of Oliver Cromwell. Unfortunately a traitor allowed the enemy access and that was that! The setting has moved the castle out toward the coast a few miles, so doesn't attempt to be an accurate depiction. The figures were taken at a reenactment of the siege, at the castle. Any cc is welcome.

It is very atmospheric (as usual). To my eye the people are a bit on the bright side, given the subdued lighting of the background.

Interesting subject-matter, your country's history is SO deep. Given the sentiment, lighting in these things is always the tricky part, in terms of where it's coming from and brightness...

Yes, they’re quite colourful too RG, need a bit of toning down. Thanks for looking.

Direction (of light) does need to be correct to ‘look right’, brightness can be choice and variable provided it’s believable. Do you think they’re wrong in this image? I should add that I’m not defending the image, just interested to know.
Corfe Castle certainly has an interesting history, as do many of our castles. Unfortunately it’s such a popular subject for photographers that it almost spoils it for local hogs!

Thanks Joe, I’m off to a huge history festival at the weekend hoping to top up on reenactment snaps.

Fascinating depiction! What a photogenic treasure - though as someone mentioned, your country is not lacking in historic settings I'm having a bit of trouble with the size of the figures relative to distance. The couple in the middle seem too large, but I have no idea why I think that.

Well first impressions are often correct Linda. They don’t bother me but then I did place and (presumably) size them to hide a problem with the castle at that point! As RG and chasgroh are suggesting they are too bright, maybe I could tone them down and they’d look better, without a resize. Thanks for your thoughts on it.

OK, I’ll try knocking the brightness back a bit on the figures. Thanks for coming back to me.

Here's a toned-down version. I think it addresses the brightness concerns quite well and I've also reduced the size of the mid-distance figures that worried Linda. Any thoughts on the changes?

As usual I am in awe of your work, an they time and thought that went into this composite. I think RG was correct about the brightness of the figures. But you ran with that suggestion and your redo is even better. For me something hard to do after viewing with the original.

I find we often need another pair of eyes after spending all that time compositing, so I don’t mind making a few changes if I agree they’re an improvement. We can’t get it right every time - and neither do those reviewing the work, just change what seems to make sense.
