I just found out that the museum is already raising money and hunting for parts to get her FRA certified to run off the museum property on the main line again. If necessary in the past museum members have made parts by hand in our machine shop-inherited from a railroad-machines are old but still work and we have members who can use them to make or refurbish a lot of stuff.
I don't know, but I would think that this unit would be too hard to get parts for if needed. But you bring up a good subject. I am very amazed as to how skilled and how capable those people at these type of museums at making parts that are no longer available in order to get a locomotive up and running again like it just came out of the factory whether it be steam or diesel.

My husband likes to do things like that. He is on a crew volunteering to restore a steam locomotive at a tourist line here in Iowa.

I was at the national convention of the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society in Kansas City last week. Saw a presentation by Stephen Priest, who was project manager for the restoration. The locomotive is quite complete. It even has its brass bell instead of the more common steel bell. The diesel engine is in better shape than had been hoped for a locomotove that last ran in 2009. (It was built in about 1973.)

The only known big problem is that somewhere along the way, someone has stolen all of the big copper power cables and other parts from the electrical cabinet. Cost to buy replacement materials is estimated at $60,000. I understand that the museum already has a fund raising program underway to raise the money needed to get the locomotive back in operation.

The story of matching the paint colors was very interesting. Even though the Santa Fe's locomotives were dark blue at the time, the blue on this engine is not Santa Fe Blue. And the red is more orange than Santa Fe Red.

I look forward to being able to come to Perris and take a ride behind 5704.

That is pretty cool. I grew up near the Soo Line tracks in Chicago and I am a avid model railroader and the Soo Line just happens to be my favorite. My wife and I were going to Duluth to see the Restored Soo steam locomotive when the pandemic hit. Did not get to go. Perhaps another time.

Very interesting! On behalf of everyone viewing my post, thank you! The Santa Fe; cool history. Yeah, I know all about the colors. I paint my own H.O. models, some of which are the Santa Fe. I even considered painting one in the Kodachrome scheme. I have seen lots and lots of them. At the KCS yard, I see many BNSF green and orange locomotives still in their colors only with a KCS logo on them. I need to photograph those.

On its way west. It will be kept in secure storage at the rail yard until the museum can get it to our place. The connection to the main line is torn up right now. The "snap track" temporary track is there waiting to be laid once everything is ready and all necessary clearances have gone through.

5704 was at Cajon Summit 8 hours ago so it is probably at the BNSF rail yard storage in San Bernardino now.
