Our forecast for yesterday was an expected near 100 degrees so I thought I would surely see a cottonmouth early morning at the conservation area but I was wrong. On my way home about two blocks from my house I saw this snake stretched out on the street. Living in a small town with little traffic allows one to stop without blocking traffic. Google Lens ID'd this as a gray rat snake also known as a chicken snake. Once as a child my mother asked me to go to our hen house to gather eggs and being very short I had to stand on my toes to see inside the nests. At this one nest I came face to face with a chicken snake over five feet long which really scared me so I ran back to our house to tell my brother and he killed it. We had a picture for years of my brother holding that snake but I don't know what happened to it. I didn't kill this one nor do I kill any snakes.
Nice image, Jerry. I hate snakes.
Very nice! Looks healthy...many snakes will eat eggs...part of their balanced diet!!
Here in Texas we call them Texas Rat Snake, our friends. They take care of the mice and obviously rats.
Good photo! Looks like a pretty hefty snake!

I think snakes in general have an undeserved bad reputation.

Thanks Chief. It wasn't a large snake. If anyone in this town other than me had been in my place I'm quite sure they would have driven over it with the intent to kill and possibly someone came along after me and did just that but I hope not.
