How do I keep this from happening

The project bin goes away once you click on a tool, but at the bottom you can bring the project bin back by clicking on the icon.

Is there a preference setting somewhere?

I don't think there is a preference for this. I just got PSE 11 and I love it. Boone

Just read your other post about PSE 8. I load several picture into the bin because I drag them up into a background layer for my blended picture. Not all user of PSE work like this way.

I lived at Huntington Beach back in 1972-74. I doubt it if "Hamburger Henry's" is still there? It was in the ctr. of town, if I remember right. It was "THE SPOT" back then. Boone

There was a video which was linked on an UHH post a few days ago, showing how to set up PSE11 (sorry I don't have the reference). It said that this hiding of the project bin is automatic, so it appears it always happens to save screen space and allow a larger area for the tool preferences.
