It happens with computers, so I guess it can happen with cell phones: not all software will run. I wanted to download the GoPro app to my phone, a Samsung Galaxie J3. Unfortunately, the app is not compatible with that phone. I was able to download it to my Moto e6 (or 6e?). This is the only time that software wouldn't work, but I guess it's something to keep in mind.
My old S-3 hasn't update the OS and half of my apps in years. Yea the phone is outdated. So outdated that after 12/31/22 it won't even make a phone call. (4G goes away.) I replaced it with an S-21. I can still use the S-3 as a pocket calculator, grocery list, camera, and a few other things, but why. So off to the recycle plant it goes.

I use my old cell phone for a digital clock. I have a clock app that goes full screen, I put it in my TV cabinet behind a smoked glass door, permanently plugged into it's charger. I plowed a dado in a small piece of wood for a stand for the phone, and painted the stand black. All you can see through the glass door is the large digital clock display. WiFi keeps the clock perfectly timed. Been running fine for several years now.

Cell phone can still do a lot without being able to make phone calls. I keep the old ones that still turn on.

And what do you use it/them for? My new phone does everything my old one did.
It has lots of apps, and it gets Wi-Fi, so it can do anything it could do when it had a cell tower connection except make phone calls: camera, calculator, Wi-Fi strength, level, vibration meter, TV remote, etc.

My last cell phone an LG V20 I use to play solitaire. That game had lots of ads and wore down the battery fast. Now, I put it in Airplane mode so none of the ads display, and the battery lasts a long time. AT&T made me replace that phone because it wasn't 5G. The gave me a cheap $40 cell phone that I hate. Since my old phone does everything it always did except make phone calls, I keep it around for the 99.9999% of things I always used it for. I rarely get or use the phone part of the phone for an actual phone. BTW, that "old" LG takes great pictures and movies.
