I have a Canon R6 and a Canon EF 70-200 F4. I plan to purchase a Canon RF 100-400 F 5.6 for its price and weigth.
Please give me some advise about this less expensive tele lens. Thank you

I use that lens on an R6 and it is excellent. It’s easy to use hand held, even fully extended and it takes great pictures.

I have one on my R5, and I'm very pleased with it. At 82 I have trouble with the big stuff, but this is light, easy to handle, and very sharp. You lose a stop or two but that's what higher ISO is for...

Thank you rdemarco52.
In the reviews they mention about the softness at the center at 400mm, is it right ?

Thank you Chuckla. I am 81 and I do not like to carry "big stuff" too.
Have you noticed any softness of the lens at full range ?

I have not noticed, but I am not an authority. I have been very pleased with the results in using this lens.

I am guessing that is the older version. Yes it is a little soft fully extended. Not bad but comparing to ver.II it's softer

There are two versions of the 100 to 400 L series lense. The newer one is the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and is sharper than the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS THe second generation of this L series lens is sharper

The post is about the mirrorless RF mount, not anything about yesterday's EF / DSLRasaur technology. The lens proper name is: Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM. It costs just $599 new.

Own it and use it with R5 and R6, find it to be a great lens, does not have the reach of the RF100-500, nor the weight, which as some have already indicated is a concern. I doubt if you can go wrong with it.

As Chg_Canon so eloquently points out, the original poster is asking about the:

Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM lens... which is currently on sale for $599 (regularly $649).

I don't have that lens personally. There are plenty of reviews online. A good place to start is here: https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-RF-100-400mm-F5.6-8-IS-USM-Lens.aspx Use the image quality tool there to compare the test shots done with it versus a lens you already have.

Note that the RF 100-400mm is an f/5.6 to f/8 variable aperture lens (not "f/5.6" the way you wrote it). This is what allowed Canon to keep it quite small, light and affordable. It's under 1.5 lb. As with all Canon lenses that aren't L-series, the lens hood (highly recommended) is sold separately. It the Canon ET-74B is still out of stock and you don't want to spend $45 for a lens hood, there's the Vello ET-74B for $15. There also are various 67mm deep (telephoto) screw-in lens hoods, which can be handy if you plan to use a circular polarizer on the lens sometimes. Those typically don't reverse for storage, though... the way the bayonet mount hoods do.

Own it and use it with my R6. Have no regrets whatsoever purchasing this lens.
