Trail cameras are akin to 'Door Bell Cameras'. Both can catch animals in action including the animals that steal packages left on your porch.

This topic was inspired by some of the comments in Hip Coyote's topic "Cameras & Artists Become Obsolete?"

I recently saw a story about a wildlife photographer (Will Burrard Lucas) who gets fantastic shots by setting up "camera traps" at night along paths frequented by animals. I wonder what you all think of that approach in the context of all the discussion of "what is photography", manipulation of images, AI, etc.

Wildlife photographer Morten Hillmer does that as well.

We are located in a very suburban area, a gated 55plus community, and I have 3 outdoor cameras that are on all the time. Two are trail cameras and one is a PTZ Wi-Fi camera on a pole.
You wouldn't think there would be much to capture but we've had coyotes, bobcats, armadillos, possums and bears wander through.
Not art but photo capture and a chance to play with Photoshop on low-light photos.

I do not feel this is photography in the true spirit of the art.

Trail cameras are good for finding where the wildlife is walking past or hanging out. Then you can return with a better camera and lens and hope they come back.

I believe that trail cameras are only for research and maybe for art photography, same goes for drones. If those photographs like it did happened were entered to a competition it must then be under Trail Camera and Drone section and not under general photography! I might be old fashioned but still believes that a human eye that must be behind a camera to capture a image including if the camera is on a tripod, a human must be behind the camera!

A remote camera, set up to shoot automatically/remotely, is not "stalking wildlife". It is photographing animals.

Not stalking.

Wouldn't everyone out looking for a picture, be 'stalking' a photograph?

Perception...

Don't you have to see the animal first and THEN stalk it? That is how I hunt some animals. There is no stalking, only looking if you don't see the animal. Cameras on a trail are not stalking at all, just taking photos of something moving in front of the lens.

Not really something for me, as it removes part of the process which I enjoy. Kind of like fishing by tossing hand grenades into a lake - you'll certainly get the fish, but without the challenge of skill.

I don't think anyone suggested that a trail camera is Art. However, if the image quality is good enough and you have some post processing skills you can surely produce an image that could be considered Artfull. To use a worn out phrase...to each his own.

Art vs Artful - I think you've got it!

Is a Space Telescope shot Art or Artful? Mars Rover shots? Earth-bound time-lapses of the Moon?

Photography is expansive enough to encompass all of these methods, IMHO.
