In the US, some helpers sometimes are used at the rear of the train - or even in the middle - in mountainous territory. We sometimes see them here in the flatlands when they don’t both to stop and remove them when the land becomes level. I have not remembered to photograph any the few examples I have seen. One difference is that they use modern diesels.
