I used to hate the self checkout in supermarket. I think they went cheap on me in services but I started to see the good with them. Yesterday I went to McDonald's and the total was $7.23. I have only a $10 bill, a couple of Quarters and some pennies. So I gave the cashier $10 bill, one quater and 3 pennies. I told him that's $10.28 and he should enter in the register as such. He paused and even if he enter the amount and finally hesistantly gave me $3 in change (which correctly should be $3.05).
I often have problem with the cashiers who don't know what to do when I gave them more money than absolutely needed. The self checkout machine has no problem with that.

Yup, I do that also sometimes to get specific change back.
One time I over paid with a couple of singles, intending to get a $5 bill back.
It wouldn't use all their ones and actually gave them a couple of 'extra' ones.
(They go through ones like crazy.)
The cashier took a double take.......

Even though I knew that they have problem figure it out in their head so I told them just enter the amount I gave them into the cash register and it would tell them how much change they should give back. Still they are at a lost.

I too have never liked self check out. A person might say the straws are over on the counter when you pick up your food or sometimes they will make suggestions. Self check out does not do that. I hate Mcdonals food, the french fries or good if they are hot and fresh but I find many places don't change out their oil or put the mcfish in with the fries. I find in supermarkets they don't have all the fruits and vegetables marked so you have too look them up so to me that is them not doing their job and I have to touch a nasty touch screen to do lookups.

Sure there is a human element. But when I check out there are more chances of mistakes because I don't do the process as often as someone who does it all the time. Walmart. I was self checking out, the gateraid was on sale cheap. When I checked out the price was wrong. I told the person standing there not checking out anyone and twiddling his thumbs he said he could not leave his station, so I had to go back, take a picture and show it to him before he would change the price. Covid is another giant excuse for poor customer service.

These cashiers may be our future lawyers, doctors or most likely politicians.

It worries me that the people behind the register "not all are kids" aren't able to make the correct change when we do this.

Soon, we'll be expected to come in early to unload the trucks and stock the shelves as well.... and you won't be getting a W-2 for that either.

Nobody counts back change anymore either. They just stack the coins on any bills you my have coming back and dump it in your hand. We had a garage sale a few weeks ago and my wife ALWAYS counts back the change. Everbody under about 50 look at her like she had two heads. One even asked what she was doing.

Yes, try giving a clerk at a fast food drive in 11.00 for a 5.59 purchase (so you get back a 5.00 bill + change rather than loading your wallet with 1.00 bills). Invariably they will hand you back the 1.00 and tell you the 10.00 is all you need for the purchase!

That reminds me of a trip to the supermarket many years ago, before smartphones with calculator apps. The man ahead of me in line did what you did, different amount obviously but I'll have to use your numbers because I long ago forgot the exact amount. The customer handed the cashier the $10 which the cashier entered into the cash register which told her the amount of change but the man then handed her the 28 cents. Now she doesn't have a clue. I said he gets $3.05 back. The customer says that's right $3.05. The cashier calls the store manager who comes over, goes back in his office and then comes back with his calculator enters all the numbers and then says, you owe him $3.05. Even the store manager couldn't do the math.

In April and May 2022 while we were in Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro the grocery clerks of all ages could give the correct change without the cash register telling them. Must be that the people in those countries learn math while in school unlike here in the states.

None of them seem to have the very basic returning change,i was taugh to start at the penny and work upward, today they look at the register display and work downward,
