I am going on a trip to Alaska and I would like to purchase a SD back up reader. It would need to be self powered and hold at lease 1TB of RAW data... any suggestions...

Thank you

Bob

A terabyte? Granted, larger format cameras screw with these calculations, but round numbers work as follows:

24MP camera gives roughly 1000 RAW images onto every 32GB card (SD/CF/etc)

1TB is 1,000GB or about 30x32GB cards or about 30,000 RAW files.

Is that an accurate estimate of the duration and shooting needs during the trip?

Thank you for your response...

Probably not, however it would remain in my camera bag and be used over and over. I seems to me that currently memory is getting larger. Plus I may include some video with the downloads...

Probably more than his immediate needs but probably worth it for the little price difference for something smaller.

I'd be careful with that. I have found that keeping thumb drives and electronics in a bag that is subject to jostling, temperature fluctuations and perhaps spills and mishaps can be a recipe for disappointment, if not disaster. I have a variety of such storage media, but I only put them in my bag when I think I'm about to use them.

You won’t be able to find it. The RAVPower site shows it as out of stock and seems to have been taken over by scam pop-ups. This is the exact same thing with another manufacturer’s name on it. It’s not the backup drive itself but it will power any portable backup drive and facilitate the transfer of files.

Yep, just looked and agree. I did get through the pop ups (odd that my blocker did not work). The device does work as advertised, but one had to get hands on it to make it work.

There are several SSD drives now being sold with built-in SD card readers. Here is a link...

Or do an internet search "ssd with sd card reader"

Not sure any are "self-powered" although you probably could attach a USB backup power bank (ie. battery).

I and many other Hogs bought the AC750 when it was a RavPower product for $40. For travel when I don’t want to bother with a laptop or whatever, it’s always been my workhouse along with an external SSD. It appears to me that the same device with a change of name is now worth twice as much? Amazing…😵‍💫

I was looking for similar backup 2 weeks ago. Wonder why RAVPower and WD discontinued the ones they sold several years ago. I don’t even care about wireless capability. Frustrated. Will just have to take laptop and externals and more sd cards, I guess.

I own all three of the FileHubs that Ravpower sold starting with the WD01 thru the 09. I never had an issue with any of the hardware for what I used them for, which was backup. But… the documentation was horrible as “is” the app for all the devices. The ONLY saving grace was Ravpower’s technical support, which I thought was quite good. The WD09 (AC750) is by far the best of the lot and only because of its ability to backup directly from a source SD card. However, the default auto method literally copied everything from the SD card to the receiving device including the file and folder structure. If you wanted to just copy a single folder (like only certain images, for example), you had/have to use the app.

There is the NewQ Filehub which seems to be the exact same thing. If you really want the RAVPower version you can find them used on eBay.

Thanks. Looks handy. But I wanted one that actually stored the photos—this just seems to transfer them to a USB. I’ll just take laptop etc.
Thanks.
