Covid and Sick Days

My son was out of work for about a week with Covid, and he used three sick days. When he got back, he learned that if he had gotten a note from a doctor, he wouldn't have had to use his sick days. It was nice of them to tell him that after the fact.

Ironically, the doctor doesn't want anyone coming in with Covid symptoms. Going to the ER and paying them to provide a test wouldn't be economically feasible. Catch-22.

Anyway, if you think you have to be out of work with Covid, check on their sick day policy.

The ER will charge a couple thousand dollars just to walk in the door.

Jerry. I would suggest that he get the Dr note and go to HR and make his pitch. They may relent and give him back his sick days. Worth the ask …….

You would think that a written results from a covid test from the local CVS or the email from them would suffice.

Correct. His bill for an asthma attack has run over $4,000, but his copay is $75. For $4,000, he gets checked over, a pill, and a prescription. Then he gets to take a brief rest on a cot. Imagine the hotel room you could get for $4,000.

He took the home test, so there is no proof. He could bring the test strip to the doctor, but that wouldn't prove he had Covid. From what I've heard, going to the ER these days can involve waiting for hours because of all the Covid patients. I suspect that most doctors don't want Covid people in their waiting rooms. For a while, my doctor had you call from the parking lot before they would open the door. My son went there with an asthma attack, and they didn't want to let him in because his breathing sounded bad. He eventually convinced them to let him in.

Around here, Walgreens and some other pharmacies will do drive-through Covid 19 testing. That should be sufficient...

It is what it is. Without further ado, get a note from the doctor. Your mileage may vary.

That's too bad. An excellent example of why you should always know your benefits.

Never mind the bill - what did the insurance company actually pay. The actual bill is meaningless, the payment from insurance is what counts.

The insurance company always makes an "adjustment," and knocks off a large amount. Then Medicare pays some, insurance pays some, and I pay whatever the copay happens to be.

The amount they bill is meaningless if you have decent insurance. Medical bills account for a large portion of peoples' financial problems.

Emergency rooms are generally very busy. It seems like that they should be used for medical emergencies. Cost considerations aside, give them a break from dealing with people who waste the time of the professionals.
