Out in the canoes

Last Winter my wife and I bought canoes. We are still getting used to them. This was our first outing on a river that had some current. Previously we had kept to local lakes that have no current. It is a lot of fun to be getting a different perspective from our extended back yard.

Congratulations on finding a mutual interest. Remembering just how tiring canoes and kayaks can be, if I was to do rivers it would be strictly downstream only . I imagine that canoeing will take you through a variety of environments, some of which you wouldn't be able to get to on foot.

Beautiful set, Erich! My wife and I favor kayaks for stability.

That was the big draw for buying the canoes. I'm hoping that I can get some interesting perspectives for photos. Additionally, we really like camping in the Adirondack mountains and there are dozens of places there where you can just launch your canoe and paddle to a site. All free of charge. We like that part of the deal as well. Thanks for taking a look.

We chose the canoes because you sit in them and use a kayak paddle rather than a trad canoe paddle. Sitting in the bottom of the middle of the boat gives you added stability. Plus they are light. Made of Carbon fiber hers (12') is only 20lb. Mine is two feet longer and comes in at around 22lb. We'll see how it goes. Both canoes are about 1/2 price of a 400mm f/2.8 prime. (I can neither afford nor justify such a lens) I'll just have to see how stealthy I can be about sneaking up on some aquatic critters. We'll keep you guys posted.

Beautiful shots Erich. I spent a lot of time canoeing in the Everglades 50 years ago. I found it fun and a really good way to sneak up on wildlife of all kinds

I agree. When I saw the island, I knew that I wanted to make a photo of it. The trick was composing without having the canoe get in the way. Thanks for taking a look.

It is going to be a chore to get my wife in the canoe when the light is really good. Well, mornings will be tough; but evenings are a definite possibility. I'm really excited to explore this new way of enjoying both the outdoors and some novel photographic possibilities. Thanks for taking a look.
