That's a nice shot. You could criticize it for not being in focus, but that's not the point of the image.

For me the photo has a lot of emotional impact: I feel agitated and claustrophobic In my golden years, I'm not a fan of the noise and close quarters of busy cities.

The blur and framing are key to the mood. Dodie's comments about the colors and the near, middle and distant planes add to my appreciation of the result. IMO a great example of the essence of city life.

I don't recall ever seeing the photo before. It doesn't appeal to me, probably because I'm not a fan of big cities and crowds. It does not tell me a story. It gives me maybe 3 words.

But then I'm more nerdy then artistic.

Then, what is the "point of the image"? (Yes, this may be a trick question. )

The term "famous" is a very amorphous term. There are many questionable "famous" things around us.

There was an interesting thread about a month or so back in which we (the viewers) were asked to comment on and critique a photograph by Ansel Adams (Moonrise Hernandez New Mexico), but with the stipulation that we should treat the photo independently of anything we know about Adams, etc. That was a tough assignment since, among other things, Adams is a bit of a god here on UHH, and because the photo is so damn famous.

I'd like to try this again but with a far lesser known photo, by a photographer whom I've never heard mentioned on this site (so may be unfamiliar to many here). It won't be completely anonymous I suspect since I'm sure some of you will recognize the photo, or may recognize the style of the photographer (especially if you're a street photographer). If you do know the photo and/or the photographer, please don't drop a spoiler on the thread. I think the exercise of having a blind critique is a really good one and I'm hopeful we can learn from it.

You can see that the photo breaks many of the rules of photography that we've had drilled into us, but we also know that it's okay to break the rules if you need to in order to get the result you desire. How do you rate the rule-breaking on this one? Thumbs up or thumbs down? And why?

I think it will be great fun analyzing, dissecting, deconstructing this photo. Have at it!
There was an interesting thread about a month or s... (show quote)

This photograph must be considered in light of its timing. The mid-fifties were a time of incredible prosperity and rapid change. The bus, which is the only element of the photograph not in motion, seems to represent the past. In addition to its relative sharpness, it is a model from several years ago. The photographer seems to be representing an attachment to it, and perhaps a reluctance to let go of " the way things were." The future, on the other hand, while bright and colorful, is much less clear...much less well-defined.

While this image is not one I would be likely to frame and hang on my wall, it is a fascinating use of the relatively limited technical options available at the time to express these feelings. I would judge it to have been successful in achieving its mission. I have some questions around just how the photographer achieved his vision, but I'll leave them unvoiced, because they are very much secondary to the statement that is being made here.

Looks like some bad shots I've taken...none of them are famous, and I'm a complete unknown......and as always, beauty and pleasure derived is in the eye of the beholder. That said - have fun!!

It should not take a lot of imagination to realize that this image is not about the individual objects in the frame but about the situation it describes. Movement and blur are the strong points.

It's nice that it was done in color like much of his other work but his B&W image are also very striking.

It's not HCB but it brings to mind the Decisive Moment.

"The Intersection", aside from the obvious horizontal divisions of the photo there is a lot more going on in this pic if you just take the time to look at it. I agree with Bill_de that the delete button would take away this interesting shot much to soon given that today all we seem to care about is DOF, sharpness and color balance. For me this pic is a work of art, more like a painting. You must look at it for a while to appreciate the view.
