i have been watching the men's college baseball championship games...when some of the players reach a base they will put a black glove on their hand....i'm wondering why.....i thought it was because the player was pitching....but it wasn't so...not all players were doing this....just curious.....
"...The oven mitt reduces the chance of jamming your fingers when you slide headfirst into a base and also protects from players stepping on your hand with their cleats."
yeah, it could be..sounds logical...i miss explanations like this 'cause i mute the sound on all sporting events...can't stand the talking heads.....and i don't watch any pro sports...just college and high school....thanks for the comeback.....
And, to add to montephoto's response, I would guess that it is black to contrast with a white base and make it easier for the umpire to see that they are actually touching the base.

My wife and I are great Auburn University football fans, but too old and infirm to go to the games anymore. She too hates the prattling of the commentators so we turn the sound off on the TV and she listens to the announcers on the radio while I listen to the TV sounds on head phones. I don't love the announcers but the radio transmission is usually about ten seconds before the play is shown on TV and I don't like knowing what is going to happen before the play is run.
