I have tried a couple of lenses (that work fine on my D7200). Can anyone offer a test that will define what the issue is?

Hi,
Try all the usual solutions:
Check the af/mf switch on the body.
Do a two button factory reset
Try a different battery
Gently clean the electrical contacts on the body.
If those fail, take the battery out of the body, and leave the power switch on the body, on, for a day or two.
After that, I got nothing!!
Good luck.

Has focus been taken off the shutter and set to back button focus on the D7000?

Sorry, I just found the reason for it! I forgot I have the back button focus turned on!🫢
