Call the game warden ASAP. They will come get it and take it to a rescue.

You have had eyes on for the whole 8 hours? Mother deer often leave fawns asleep in a safe spot while they forage coming back every so often to check on baby.
And you being there taking pictures could have been what kept Mom from coming out in the open. How close did you get and how long did you stay?

The game warden in North Dakota will not come and get it until it dies! The local zoo also does not want it.

Well isn't that a fine howdy do. Texas game wardens do rescues all the time. Hopefully the mom will return and take care of it.

There are numerous neighbors watching closely, keeping their distance. The mother has not returned. I took 4 shots in about a minute and then left.

The statement from the game and fish was "let nature take its course".

Good, you left quickly. I have read a story about a shore bird that is rare in the part of the East Coast were a pair appeared and hatched a chick. A mob of looky-loos and photographers descended on it and in spite of signs and cops/rangers and wardens telling them to leave they swarmed the nest area and chased off the parents - the baby died after two days from stress and not being fed.

Are there any private shelters or rescue groups anywhere nearby? Some veterinarians, parks and wildlife areas have a rescue shelter attached run by volunteers. A water fowl wildlife area near my home town in Western Kentucky has one that over the years has grown to work with all kinds of birds and mammals and is now one of the largest in the country. So large and with such a variety of animals/birds, some crippled and there permanently that is is now in some of the tourist guide books about that area. They get a lot of donated funds from those tourists.

Well meaning people try to rescue wild animals like fawns and baby seals. This is a mistake and one that people should not do this as frequently young animals are left by their mothers sometimes for several hours which is part of nature's cycle . If you call the local or regional wildlife department, this is what they will advise.

Some might see a "cutie". Some will see a reservoir of Lyme disease. And acoarst some see venison for 2024. Hogsters are usually quick to sing the refrain "the eye of the beholder" ... but sometimes not. I am not heartless. I carry a small rifle to dispatch any deer that doesnt die on the spot when I happen to hit it.

In North Dakota, you would be breaking the law!

Well hopefully you don’t hit one very often.

A couple of years ago, a good sized white tailed buck was hit in front of our house and the car drove off leaving him injured and in pain. I was out of town at the time and just heard about it from a neighbor. The police were called (this was in the city), but they refused to shoot the deer and left him in pain until animal control finally came and euthanized the deer (making the meat inedible). If I had been home, I would have gotten my handgun and shot the deer and likely been arrested by the policeman for discharging a firearm in the city limits, but there are times you just have to do the right thing and be willing to suffer the consequences.

Survival of this fawn is practically none without the mother. To me it is hard to understand that responsible authorities are refusing to help this poor baby.
I find kind of unusual if the mother does not return but nature is nature.

If I was living there I would do my best to rescue this poor animal.
