Three of them--these intertwined snakes were hanging on a limb at Mounds State Park. Mating season?

I must admit that my wife spotted them first and alerted me to them (she seems to be turning into my spotter for things up in trees).

Looks like a Threesome or maybe a Foursome too me,< counting tails instead of pixels

Very cool shot. I never could understand people who had the unreasoning fear of snakes or spiders for that matter. My wife is one who has that fear and she can't explain it to me

Thanks. I don’t really understand, either. I can’t say that I am afraid of them, but I just don’t like them.

Yes, they are mating. The pheromone put out by the female attracts many males who will jockey for position to mate with her. Several years ago my daughter came home from school and told me there were many snakes in the front yard fighting. When I went to check there were about seven or eight counting the female but I didn't correct my daughter on what they were doing.

Very nice shot John. Think after seeing them I'd be heading in the opposite direction.

Thanks, Bill. They were far enough away--I zoomed out to 270 and then cropped.

Beautifully done, John. There is a lot of detail in the download. I think this might qualify as a nest of vipers.

Thanks much, Joe. You may be correct.

Thanks, Frank. There are at least three. I couldn't tell if there were four or not.

Great shot. Considering what they were up to, you probably weren’t even on their radar. They look like DeKay‘s brown snakes. Very common in the Midwest and totally harmless. They eat worms, grubs and other little critters on the ground.
Thanks again for getting the shot.

These would not qualify as vipers... as these are non-venomous. Vipers are venomous! Knowledge is your best friend, and can remove fear.
