I have a uv filter on my Tamron 150-600 and shoot moon all the time.
Like I've said on hete I live 3 miles from ocean and shoot there often rather clean salt air mist off filter than a lens.
Lunar eclipse. I've shot many stages of the moon and never had an issue. Don't know where you got your info from

I have now broken 3 uv filters.
Also have had 2 lenses with the glass damaged that did not have a filter. I always use a lens hood as well.
Perhaps you just baby things more than others, I have gone from cliffs to the ocean in a period of about 50 years in places where tourists never go most of the time.

IMHO:
I still place my confidence in the content of the two quoted responses above, plus my own experience, and prior postings on this subject . . .

As a professional I have to have the camera ready to shoot at a moment's notice, in ice, snow, sea spray, industrial situations, deserts in sandstorm. Not a question of babying anything, but of being able to shoot whatever, wherever, whenever. I replace filters every couple of years, but my glass is spotless.

If you'd rather clean the fingerprints, dust, and miscellaneous gunk off the filter glass instead of the lens surface, use a high-quality Clear or UV filter. If you don't care, don't use a filter. It's your lens; it's your decision how you treat it and whether you protect it. If you dream today of ever selling your expensive lens in the future, ask yourself if you'd buy a used lens with a scratched front glass?

I'am in Your camp on this one. We went out to One of The Best Metroparks in Michigan 2 days ago. I was on this Boardwalk with a couple of Friends taking shots of the Heron Rookery as the Little ones were being fed by Mom. And then caught some really sharp Osprey shots, as they were fishing of course. Well, I had my Z9 with my 100-400mm new Z Lens which is really sharp, but for the money I told my Nikon Rep. to keep it. I get great shots out of my 600mm f/4 anyway. Well to wrap this up, I had a Red-Winged Blackbird in my sights and I did not move as he flew right into the Lens. My GOD. my eye is still hurting. He cracked the filter, but the Lens was Great. I basically always use B+W Schott Filters that do have the nicest coatings that you can get. I would rather buy a new Filter than have my Lenses look like they have been in a Sandstorm. I keep my Glass impeccable as that is what takes in the Image first, before it hits thew Sensor.

I Concur.
I use Canon "Protect" filters along with a lens hood.
Also, IMHO I never will understand paying $3K+ for a lens and then putting a substandard filter on it.
Sorry for the rant, but I do feel better . . . .

I guess that the anti-filter crowd would have told you to duck instead of using a protective filter, grin.

You got that right. I stood there snapping my Z9 as fast as I could. Everyone was rolling. I have the Final shot right at the Second to getting my eyeball stuck into the viewfinder. That Red-Tipped Blackbird was dazed to. But, after all said and done, it gave us another Round after "To The Bird" tip/

So, you are using a protective filter on a 600 f4 - what is that - about 130mm or so ?? !!

I hope that you weren't badly or permanently injured.

Filters are good a clear is preferred to a UV.

I use a CLEAR filter on every lens I can. They do not modify the color as does a UV. Best of luck to all.

Curious - How does (in what manner) does a UV filter modify the color?

Put on a pair of UV coated glasses and you'll quickly see! Best of luck.

Well, I was hoping for a description/definition as I have no idea if my glasses have a UV coating.
I've looked through a UV filter and have not noticed any difference. So I don't know if it's my eyes or brain.....
Or if it is that negligible.
If I knew what to look for, I might be able to see a difference.

UV filters tend to emphasise yellow!

[quote=rgrenaderphoto]Thank the Fuji Gods, the lens and camera are working perfectly.

I put one on every lens - one saved a zoom that fell out of my hands when I was traveling a few years ago.
