I went out to check the mail this afternoon and I picked a dandelion blossom on the way back in and staged it for a focus-stacking session.

A bit of trivia about the dandelion is that an average of 15,000 seeds is produced per dandelion plant for they bloom more than once. There are usually 150-200 seeds per flower and up to 10 flowers per plant. For those that hate seeing them in their yard, this is why it may seem like a losing battle.

I staged this session with a little Fujifilm X-T20 mirrorless camera connected to a bellows with a 50mm f/2.8 enlarger lens set at f/5.6. Each shot in the stack was taken at a distance of 50-micron and when the session was complete, it was processed in Zerene Stacker. Two IKEA LED desk lamps diffused through vellum tracing paper provided the illumination for the session. A piece of pastel multiple-colored backlight scrapbook paper was placed behind the dandelion to create the background colors.

Thanks, Tinusbum. It would have been nice if it had a critter on it.

Very nice! Another interesting things about dandelions is that they don't need to be pollinated to reproduce. If not pollinated, they simply clone themselves into their seeds. This is pretty common in other plants as well.
I don't feel good about spraying them. They flower their little hearts out all summer long, and there is really nothing wrong with having lots of them.

Thanks, Mark. I've learned that self-pollination occurs when the blossoms close up at night. I believe that to be an interesting survival tactic. Self-cloning has its advantages, however, an illness can devastate an entire species as it did to the "Big Mike" bananas. Speaking of bananas....Walmart sells more bananas than they do any other item in the entire store.

Dandelions that close up are the prettiest thing. I avoid mowing them down, they deserve to survive.

Thanks, Brenda. Fortunately for the dandelions, their taproot is quite long and the plant can bloom many times a season so a haircut will only trim off the current blossom and a new one will soon emerge.
