Went to the Alligator Farm in St Augustine. The place was awash with nests full of chicks of many kinds. For this post I am showcasing an Anhinga nest with three always hungry aggressive kids.

These were all taken at 600mm with sizable crops. Try the downloads for more vivid viewing.

Great captures of the birds and behavior. And thanks for the explanation of the feeding. We see the same process with White-faced ibises in our area.

Little digestion takes place in a bird's crop, which is the holding tank of a bird's digestive system. It is regurgitated to feed the kids before it passes into the next digestive chamber where acid is added to break down the food. Most of the larger water birds feed their kids in a similar manner. Through the viewfinder with the 600mm I often see fish of different sizes and other water morsels being regurgitated. Some parents are very careful about particle size when feeding really tiny chicks who can't handle big pieces.
