There was an older kid in my neighborhood who got one of those in black in '57. Six years later I guess he tired of it because it was replaced we with a '63 Corvette split-window coupe, also black. I guess he liked classics and had parents who could afford to buy them.

And his name was Joey Chitwood?

Beautiful auto. Ford produced a small batch of these with a supercharged V-8. I don't remember the cid, but I remember they were over 300hp. Why did Ford stop producing the 2 seater 'Bird. Thanks for sharing these photos.

probably 312ci's. As nice as it was, it wasn't a true sports car, but more of a sporty car. On a sports car to sports car basis it was no match for the equally new, and better performing Corvette. I think Ford realized that, and felt a "sporty car" would be fine as a 4 seater, and it wasn't a bad call on their part because they sold lots more of the 4 seater models in the subsequent years. Eventually, and sadly, it just became another Ford model with nothing special about it. Although they were different than the '55-'57 the '58 - early sixties 4 seat versions were still nice, and very collectible today.

We has a 1959 Bird. Black with red interior. It burn your legs in the Summertime. I thought the '58 - 60 and the 64 -66 were nicely styled, but then they got too wierd for me. Now I look at them and think that they are so ugly they're are cool.
