Try pointing the camera at an area of the sky free of distractions. Then press the starred button (*) on the back of the camera. This action freezes the sky exposure setting for 20 seconds.

You have to press the shutter key before the time runs out. If it does, then you'll have to try the action again.

The result of this action provides an accurate metering of the sky. Obviously, if you try this action more than once using the same area of sky, then you should see a very similar exposure from shot to shot.

In short, from the narrative, I suspect a wayward metering setting. The provided photographs look askew in their exposure.

Let me know how it goes.

I'll try some of these things after I get back from my trip.

If you’ve been following this thread it should be clear by now that the problem is NOT the meter. Although the exposure of those shots is completely different, the EXIF data indicates they they metered the same. The issue seems to be in how the shot executed not how it was metered.

Could it be that the shutter sticks occasionally? I believe the EXIF data only reports what the camera tells the shutter to do not what the actual shutter speed is.

Probably not since the evidence posted so far shows a difference in DOF.
