You have to press the shutter key before the time runs out. If it does, then you'll have to try the action again.
The result of this action provides an accurate metering of the sky. Obviously, if you try this action more than once using the same area of sky, then you should see a very similar exposure from shot to shot.
In short, from the narrative, I suspect a wayward metering setting. The provided photographs look askew in their exposure.
