RAW processing can help

The first shot is what the RAW image looked like when I took the shot. I then ran it through Canon DPPV4 and then through Topaz AI Clear to see if I could get anything. It worked pretty well considering it was poorly exposed. I'm wondering if you could get the same results processing a JPG file?

Probably not. How many stops under exposed do you think or know it was? I process with ACR. I'd say about 4 to 5 stops or more. How did you get it? AE on your camera should have been better than that. A Manual exposure gone very amiss? Or was it a flash exposure?

I was just fooling around with the shot and forgot I had it set for a brighter daylight shot. 125th sec, ISO 100, and f9. All manual. When I looked at the shot I got to wondering how much data I could recover.

Had you shot in Jpeg instead of RAW, the resulting image would look a lot like the first image, because that is what you are seeing. There really isn't a RAW image as RAW is basically unprocessed data. Imbedded in each RAW file is a JPG thumbnail image, and that is what's being displayed. Had you shot it JPG, there wouldn't have been enough data to process and create a clear image like the second one. Sure, processing would have cleaned it up a little, but JPG just doesn't have enough data to be anywhere near as forgiving as RAW.

Interesting quick little project. I processed the straight out of the camera, black JPG file. I also processed the JPG file you created from the original CR2 file, which obviously had much more data. You can see quite a difference.

That's what I thought and that's why I mostly use RAW.

Thanks, that confirms my suspicions.

I know that this doesn't answer your question, but I used your 2nd pic and did a little tweaking using Topaz Products . . . .
