A couple days ago when I saw these two water snakes the little one was swimming circles around the larger one in what I thought was a playful display between mother and offspring. But when I did research on these snakes I learned the mating season is from April through June and the offspring are born from July through September with the gestation period being between three to five months so it is too early in the year for this to be mother and offspring. Also the mother doesn't stay with the litter. So what I witnessed was a mating ritual. I know the females are larger than the males but never thought this much of a size difference. When making another loop around the lake I stopped again in that general area and saw several small snakes swimming in the direction I saw these two probably following the pheromone trail being emitted by the female.

Interesting photo, and information.
Reminds me of the time my dad and I were in a canoe on Buffalo River, and there was one of these lying on a branch over the river, over our line of travel! I fortunately saw it, and barely managed to steer my end of the canoe slightly to the side before it dropped into the river, right beside us! I may have learned to walk on water if it had fell in the boat, lol. They are non-venomous.

Thanks Doug. The water snake closely resembles the cottonmouth water moccasin and that's what I thought it was until I saw the round pupils.
