I have read the Posts on this Topic. I would terribly be disappointed to see in the Future where My Son's Death in Afghanistan was taken so Trivial. I hate "Political Views" from those who have never had the loss of a Person who was Fighting the GOOD FIGHT, so we could have a Great History devoted to Our Countries. My Parents escaped the Holocaust to come to the United States, they are not tearing their Past apart, yet we Live in a Country filled with many different views. We are reminded of what went on in those Dark Days of History, yet Our Country wants no History of what happened when the North went and fought against the Confederates to form a Great America. I must be in a Dream. People do not even have a clue when the subject of abolishing Slavery happened or how for that matter. I raised 2 Sons on my Own, since their Mother passed when my Youngest was 2. I lost him in 2005 and my Oldest shortly before. I hate to think that they died with no remembrance.

I have German friends. They were born and raised after the war. Germany is no longer Nazi Germany, and the reason for this is that the children were taught their ugly history in school, and they understood that they screwed up and hurt a lot of people. Yes, they were made to feel bad about it, and they became better people. We are still divided in this country on the meaning of the Civil War.

Yes we are, but now this is not a "Civil War", it is called Division as you stated. Tearing down Monuments mean nothing and I have always said "If You Do Not Like America, Then Get Out". There should be no special sector in the U.S. that should determine what Our History once was. I was born on a Ship coming to America and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities that She Has Granted Me.

There are at least two Americas these days, if not more. We are becoming a tribal society. Which tribe should get out? The early settlers, the great waves of immigrants between the two World Wars, or the current immigrants from countries that most Americans cannot even spell.

No one who came here legally should get out, whether they are citizens, have a green card, are legally awaiting an asylum hearing or are students on visas. Doesn't matter where they came from.

But immigration opinions hardly describes the scope of our tribalism

To me it seems that it’s not so much race that polarizes us now - it’s politics, and in my lifetime, it’s never been remotely this bad. It’s now all about winning rather than doing the right, fair, kind or just thing, and we are poorer and weaker as a country for it. What surprises me more is that each party has a detailed comprehensive doctrine that covers everything from guns to abortions. Every vote in Congress is completely along party lines. It seems amazing to me that regardless of the subject, where you would expect a variety of opinions on each side, they are suppressed for the sake of party loyalty, right or wrong, and nothing seems important enough to change this behavior and unite America in a common purpose, not even a pandemic that has cost a million lives. Sorry to be veering way off topic.

What you say is true and it has caused a lot of differing posts here, so maybe not so much off topic.

Part of what is filing this is I believe we as citizens were caught off guard by the very fast adaption of "identity politics" it borders on religion in terms of its power to motivate citizens to vote one way or the other. That's not all good because it motivates citizens emotionally rather than logically.

Since the OP has been absent for some two weeks, I think it might be time to put this thread out of its misery.
