The Onaqui herd of wild horses wonders in the Utah west desert in mostly open range and few human visitors. The wind seems to excite the horses and they become somewhat more active. I took these photos a few weeks ago on a windy day at the end of March. There were probably about 50-75 horses in this group, although the herd is currently estimated to consist of about 120-210 horses in multiple groups. In 2021 the BLM reported gathering 435 horses and returned 123 to the range.

Yes, I liked the 3-D feel of the photo as well. The dust behind the horses helped blur the background a bit extra and the horses have enough depth of field to keep them entirely in focus.

Yes, it was a really nice opportunity to see the herd while they were quite active.

Thanks Mike. My wife and I drove out to Fish Springs and didn't see much, but we came across the horses on the way home. I've seen portions of the herd several times, usually between Dugway and Simpson Springs....or in that general area.

Love these shots. What a treat to get wild horses like this.
