Yesterday afternoon a Laughing Gull feeding frenzy occurred in the canal behind my house. Initially a few gulls quickly became several dozen birds frantically hovering nearby, squawking (laughing) loudly and actively hitting the surface of the "boiling" water. Their prize...bay shrimp.
Feeding fish like seatrout and others attack large concentrations of shrimp from below, forcing them to the surface. Then the gulls feed on the shrimp from above. Knowledgeable fishermen look for this activity and quickly position their boats near the action hoping for success.
Unfortunately, the wind was in my face for these shots, but I think you can appreciate the action. DDL to see the prize catch.
