I was walking along the gravel trail that borders one of our local creeks here in North Central Pennsylvania. Nice, warm spring day(for a change). Came across this Northern Water Snake just stretched out on the warm gravel, enjoying the sun. Pentax K3mk3/Pentax 55-300PLM.
Non-venomous but I don't call them harmless as most all of the water snakes seem to have foul tempers and a tendency to want to chomp something.
Nice set but I hate snakes.
Beautiful portraits of a very cool snake.
I know lots of people donβt like them, but itβs no problem to leave them alone, they do a wonderful job of keeping pests under control. In the US, nearly every native reptile is under threat.
Beautiful snake, nicely captured
We have several different kinds of snakes on our place 100 miles west of Dallas including Cotton Mouths, Rattlers< Water Mocs and Copperheads plus several that might not kill you.
We have killed more than one rattler and more than one copperhead this year.
I don't run around looking for snakes to kill, but to me they are all pythons, cobras or anacondas.
Killed one (not a python, cobra or anaconda) in the office here a couple of weeks ago.
They make us keep our eyes open and all the buildings have lights with motion detectors so we can move around safely at night. Killed a rattler one night in an alleyway between the barns that I would not have seen without the aid of the motion lights. Had a neighbor spend a couple of nights in a hospital last week after being bitten by a copperhead one evening as he was turning off a water faucet. Copperhead love hanging out in damp places. Love where we live but we keep sawed off 4/10 shotguns or Judges (4/10) in several places around the farm. We are horse breeders and inquisitive foals do not need snakes around them. We are at our mountain home (7,000 ft. here at the house) fpr 4-5 days and got an i-phone shot of a pretty big elk on the carport yesterday. Will post in the morning.
