Mac, it might look like it but it's exposed roots along the side of a somewhat dry wash. With enough rain, the water flows sufficiently fast to erode the sides of the wash. Thus, exposing the roots of trees growing along the banks of that wash. That water flow also accounts for the debris caught up in the root structure.

Beautiful Bob. I've seen things like that while walking the desert but always in color and they are not that impressive. It takes an imagination to visualize that image in B&W and take the shot.
