When I first saw it was the early 80's and the only resource I had was my field guides. Thanks to Roger Tory Peterson, I eventually figured it out, but it had me pretty amazed and baffled until I did. The cowbird was nearly full-grown and his 'mother' was still caring for him. He would just stand in my yard pecking at the grass and waiting for her to return. That part of the story was pretty comical.
Interesting, not familiar with cowbirds meself.
