I tried two different outlets but charger didn't work. When I got home I tried the charger but it failed here.

In the future I'll bring my Lumix P&S and possibly one of my Nikons with a 18-270 zoom depending where I am going. I never though about bringing my second charger. Lesson learned.

I have previously advised when making an extended trip to have a backup camera, extra cards, extra batteries, a battery charger.

Well in a recent trip to North Carolina for my grand daughters wedding, I took backup camera, extra cards, extra batteries, a battery charger.

Things went well on the first couple of days as I made images until it came time to charge all four of my batteries.

My battery charger failed. Dead in the water. Without a second battery charger, I was out of the photography biz.

Lesson learned, have a second battery charger in my backup list.

I was unable to get to a camera store to buy a battery charger, all four of my batteries were exhausted.

Fortunately were were not allowed to take photos during the wedding. The wedding photographer did a tremendous job of covering the wedding and dinner so I just enjoyed being there.

My son made a few images for me on our final day with his cell phone.

I used my second charger that I had left at home to recharge my batteries as soon as I got home.

Lesson learned.

These days I have a very good iPhone with good camera built in, I have one camera where the battery can be charged either in the camera with a charger provided as well as a second charger that I purchased for that particular battery. Finally, when all else fails I have one point/shoot decent camera that takes (no kidding) double AA batteries which, at least for now, are available everywhere.

Just returned from Death Valley.
I was teased by a friend for taking three stoves, two failed in the first two days.
We had battery chargers and a D850 contaminated by sand. Went to backup and were able
to keep going.
The place can be easy or difficult depending mainly on the wind.
We determine our backup on the difficulty and length of a trip. THINGS HAPPEN!
Like in aerospace redundancy is safety, which is backup.
You are not trying to keep a craft off the ground, just trying to keep your craft not being stopped.

The last time I was in Death Valley, I was shooting a Canon A-1.
My camping stove, a big red Coleman model, has never failed or given us any trouble, but I do have a smaller one, just in case, and it's great for baked potatoes.
I have a weather resistant cover that fits my D850 and a decent size lens, and one for my Canon 5D mk IV. It does a really good job of keeping out rain and sand and dust and other nasties that are attracted to expensive cameras. I learned that valuable lesson many years ago when I dropped my Canon A-1 in the sand and had to have it professionally cleaned. You are so correct, things definitely happen!
I don't bring backup gear, I bring extra gear. I have it so I may as well use it.

Same situation but slightly different

We were out on holiday, driving an 85 Day road trip between Florida and Maine and back again when on one occasion I left my two battery chargers in the hotel room...

... my solution was, next day order directly from B&H and had the shipment FedEx overnight to our next hotel room where we were staying... yes a little expensive, cost me 24-hours, but it's salvage my trip...

Fully Agreed, backups are important and duplication in all areas are important but sometimes -- crap happens -- and you just have to roll with the punches...

Question: Say that you have extra batteries. Do any of you recharge them as you go? -- or do you wait until they all need recharging?

It seems to me that your work flow should be to charge them as you go. Then, if the charger fails or is missing, you can still shoot while you try getting another charger.

I have multiple batteries. If one/they get exhausted, or close, during the day, I recharge it/them that evening, putting another battery(ies) in the camera.
I can't see exhausting all, then starting to charge them...

I have never had a Li Ion camera battery charger fail. Had an ancient HP 45 calculator Ni-Cad battery and charger fail. Luckily two of my camera bodies use the same battery and battery chargers.

When on an extended trip, I will make sure I have the AA battery tray for my battery grip packed with the grip and OEM battery tray, just to have an alternate power source available.

I never quite grasped the concept of a "backup" camera. In my opinion, a backup camera would pretty much need to be the same as the camera it's backing up. Same lens, same settings, etc...
I often carry two cameras, and neither is a backup camera. I own well over a dozen digital cameras, but I have no duplicates. More often than not, the two cameras aren't even the same make, and they never have the same focal length lens mounted.
When I pack my gear for travelling, I always, always, always, bring multiple chargers. That way I can charge more than one battery at a time, and I even have two chargers in my vehicle, one Canon and one Nikon, since all my Nikon cameras use the same battery, and the Canon batteries are compatible across most of the Canon cameras I use on a regular basis.
I learned the importance of having multiple battery chargers a long time ago. Our expensive toys are useless without a charged battery.

I agree and also have several bodies and many lenses but all different other than having several similar 50mm lenses.

I was going over my lens collection the other day and I actually noticed I have accumulated several 50/55mm lenses. It's as if they reproduced or something because I don't recall buying so many of them. Granted, I've been hording this stuff since I was in high school, and that was a long time ago, but seriously, why so many 50/55mm lenses. Of course several of them are older pre-EF mount lenses, at least the Canon ones. At least they are in a large wood and glass cabinet that keeps them dust free.

I am glad I made my posting that started this discussion. My error in not bringing a second battery charger was not a terrible tradgedy as I had made several images of what I had wanted was to make a few images of Raleigh North Carolina and some family images of our extended family that had come for my grand daughter and taught me a lesson about back up gear.

Here a a few images that I made before my batteries died,

to All who mention USB charging, I never thought about that as anything but a good new development, but now after thinking about it, I can imagine that USB charging will also come with its own advantages as well as disadvantages. What if the USB connection in the camera goes bad? What if the USB cord shorts out? etc.etc. Bottom Line: anything can go wrong with tech no matter what form it's in. I think the best case scenario is to be prepared with extra back ups and good workarounds whenever it comes to using tech oriented gear. Thank you.

I started with a 35mm Nikon in the '60s, switched to digital with Canon and I've never had a camera or lens fail in over 50 years. I ran into the battery thing early on so I got a charger that works in my car. Problem solved since even if I'm flying, I ain't walking when I get off the plane. Mybe someday I'll rent a car somewhere that won't accept my charger but so far no problems. Of course, I check as best I can before I go. (And no, I've never been to Russia or China, Europe mainly and Canada/Mexico.)
