A good backup strategy should be a minimum of N+1 (or more).

It happens. In March, I took a workshop in Moab. I took two camera, a body and a Powershot. When I got to the hotel, I discovered I grabbed the “wrong” chargers! The dslr could be charged via a usb cable but no luck with the Powershot. Fortunately, there was a small camera store on the Main Street in Moab where I got to spend $65 for a new charger (that I didn’t plan on buying). Murphy’s law is a predictable beast.

Starting with the A6000 in 2014, some Sony MILC cameras have supported USB charging.

Starting with the GX85 in 2016, some Panasonic MILC cameras have supported USB charging (but not the GH series until GH6). On the other hand, Panasonic P&S cameras have supported USB charging for much longer (my LF1 from 2013 has USB charging).

Starting with the E-M1X in 2019, some Olympus MILC cameras have supported USB charging.

Nikon did not add USB charging to their cameras until the Z6ii/Z7ii models.

You just have to pick the right brand.

My first digital camera was a Sony in about 1995 which could be plugged in to recharge. Do not remember the model # but it had electronic zoom to 2000 I think. Later when I moved on to other brands I couldn't understand why they did not have plug in charging.

Always worth checking to see if your camera batteries can be 'refilled' from a portable power pack or simple USB charger. I rarely travel without a power pack for my phone or pad and it will also recharge my cameras.

You can buy little converter 'heads' so you can use just about any charger or power pack (USB B, C, iPhone etc to any other). I've used an iPhone last gen flat-style charger to plug into a camera's USB-C to charge. Power only, they don't allow data transfers.

That way, even if your charger dies, there's always someone who can help out, or use a power pack.

The wedding, was it on April 22 in Ashville NC and the grooms name Austin? The grooms mother asked if I had a tripod and then ask how they could mount a cell phone on the tripod and since I wasn't allowed to shoot during the wedding I ended up videoing the wedding with my Z9. Having never shot video with any of my cameras it was a first for me. The results were fantastic.

I have previously advised when making an extended trip to have a backup camera, extra cards, extra batteries, a battery charger.

Well in a recent trip to North Carolina for my grand daughters wedding, I took backup camera, extra cards, extra batteries, a battery charger.

Things went well on the first couple of days as I made images until it came time to charge all four of my batteries.

My battery charger failed. Dead in the water. Without a second battery charger, I was out of the photography biz.

Lesson learned, have a second battery charger in my backup list.

I was unable to get to a camera store to buy a battery charger, all four of my batteries were exhausted.

Fortunately were were not allowed to take photos during the wedding. The wedding photographer did a tremendous job of covering the wedding and dinner so I just enjoyed being there.

My son made a few images for me on our final day with his cell phone.

I used my second charger that I had left at home to recharge my batteries as soon as I got home.

Lesson learned.

I usually don’t carry a backup camera but I always carry an extra battery. Batteries can die at anytime but most cameras will last a long time unless dropped or abused.

Maybe it wasn't so bad that you were just able to be the proud grandfather and just sit back and enjoy the moment. Sometimes we are so caught up in "catching the moment" that we actually miss it. So, we all learn something from your experience.....pack the second charger....but in those special moments, put the camera down and just take take it all in. Trust me.....that mental picture will stay with you forever.

All of my cameras allow for recharging using a USB cord, which I travel with for using on my phone and a couple of other devices. In addition I also carry an external battery charger for my camera batteries. I can even recharge batteries in my car while driving if need be.

Re backup camera, for most uses, ANY second camera that allows you to continue to take pictures can be considered a backup.
For professionals shooting for pay it is very common to have two of your primary cameras, not just for backup.
When we shoot weddings we always have at least two and perhaps the most important reason is to allow the near instant use of two different lenses. There are many situations where taking tome to change lenses would cause missed shots. There is often no time at all. That is rarely the case with personal photography but it is nice to have a second camera just in case.

I prefer a spare power brick battery which charges off usb. It can then be used to either charge or run multiple devices, camera, cell phone, ipad etc.

I have 2 cameras that can be charged via a USB cable. Unfortunately, if the battery runs dry during a shoot, a cable isn't enough. I had it happen on a recent shoot. I needed a spare battery, and my spare was also dry!

Make sure ALL batteries, INCLUDING BACKUPS, are fully charged.
