... Or am I becoming a "grumpy old man"?
Seems like almost daily, there's the same question with a different location. i:e, I'm going to, Alaska /Africa /China /India /Paris /Grandma's attic/Creepy guy's basement.... And on and on and on, AND, what lens should I take? (I guess it depends how dark the basement is, and how much DOF you're shooting for). Now, cards on the table, I am a complete amateur, and have no clue as to each individual answer, but if it were me, (and being lucky enough for a vacation such as that), I'm pretty sure that with my limited equipment and funds, (and my new best friend Mr Google), we'd be able to figure it out. Why the daily questions, is it really a quest for knowledge, or a demonstration of the equipment at your disposal, or the wonderful trip you are taking, that some of us can only dream of? Honestly, I would guess that most of you didn't just buy your lenses yesterday, so you already have a pretty good idea of what they can do. Anyway like I said, I'm just a grumpy, (probably jealous too), old man, so ignore me, or cuss me out, (I probably deserve it, and don't mind). Lol. Have a GREAT day everyone,
Ray.

Ray, I completely agree with you. These people should know what their equipment will do and won't do. If they don't know then they should be out using their equipment and learning about it instead of being on UHH. They are the ones who know what their photography style is and should by now have the lenses to accomodate it.
I can only wish and dream about their vacations and feel sorry for myself that I can't afford a vacation like they are taking. I am not complaining that I can't afford it {or their cameras and lenses} but having money like that could be fun!

"Lenses to take on trips" is already very well underway, begun may 2.

Here you are just repeating it a day later. Soooooooo ..... am I now the Grumpy Olde Man for complaining about that ?!?!?

Seriously, check out "Lenses to take on Trips". Youll see what I mean.

With any luck, both these threads will be hijacked off onto two entirely different tangents, thus avoiding being redundant.

Haven't been to Africa. Haven't been to Japan. Haven't been to New Zealand. Haven't been to Vietnam. Haven't been to South America. Haven't been to Spain. Haven't been to Galapago Islands. Haven't been to a lot of places that I would love to go to (especially the Galapago Islands). And with just what I have listed, I doubt I will have enough money to make it to these places. If I win the lottery maybe I will see them all. But I can hardly be upset for others that will make it to these places. Life is what it is.

It would be nice to have several of the latest very high priced bodies and a cabinet full of lenses of all descriptions - but I don't, and can't afford more than those which I have had for some time - a Canon G16 and a Canon 70D with 4 lenses, including one "L" (they're 9 years old!). But they - and I - are capable of taking good pictures, and I understand the limits and possibilities inherent with them - and myself. I also fully understand the free instruction easily available on "Google and YouTube" and selectively utilize it when I feel I can benefit (for anything, not just photography).

Again, of course I would like to have some of the newest, most technically advanced equipment, but there's no chance of that ever happening, so "it is what it is". What benefit would I derive from complaining??? - about anything! I'd really enjoy even one of the trips frequently taken by some of the members here, but that can't happen, either. There are many opportunities where I am, so I take advantage of those - and enjoy what I'm doing - in everything! Some of those with the fancy equipment and those taking the great trips put up posts of considerable interest (especially the several continuing photo series, which I really enjoy). The ones who are stroking their ego might better find some other outlet!

I agree that there is a too constant repetition of really unwarranted questions, the answers to which easily could be found in earlier posts - or elsewhere (as Google), and these questions appear to be the result of laziness (or the actual inability to understand the activity of simple searching for information). But that which bothers me more is the posts with either answers or questions clearly demonstrating the inability to comprehend previous statements - or even worse - not having read prior (that day's) posts, and asking for information already given --or on many occasions effectively changing the subject altogether!

I must say, however, that I have been a member of the "HOG" for several years, assiduously read everything every day, and enjoy it greatly. I don't post much, but do spend more time than warranted in making some comments to others' posts (such as this) - but again, I enjoy it!

Suggest you use ISO 57,003, F 0.514, 2 minutes 27.4 seconds, focus at infinity (Good as any)

I know I'm a crabby old fart at times!
I do know I'm not jealous of anyones trip or equipment, what I can't and refuse to try to understand is WHY people can't make a decision on their own? What camera? what lens? what settings? It goes on and on. Do they choose what clothes they wear each day on their own?
