Here we go again. Something for all you aspiring mathematicians to solve when you're not taking photographs. Normal rules apply - no using the Internet but I will let you consult a nearby child this time if you need help.

The challenge is to get the the numbers 1 to 10 by using the number 1 and 9 only in all cases. You can use all mathematical operators but no other digits and you must use both the 1 and the 9. I'll give you a few solutions to start you off:

8 = -1 + 9
9 = 1 x 9
10 = 1 + 9

So just 1 to 7 to do!

Enjoy and keep safe

You have too much time on your hands, and I have a headache! (but for any intellectuals out there), the answer is of course, 42.

9/9=1
9/9+1=2
SqRoot9=3
SqRoot9+1=4
SqRoot9+1+1=5
SqRoot9+SqRoot9=6
SqRoot9+SqRoot9+1=7

You can only use 1 1 and 1 9 in each formula. 1-4 are ok but after that you are using too many 9's or 1's.
Good try

Just noticed that you have 1 and 2 with 2 9's! and 3 does not use both 1 and 9
- only one 9 and one 1 allowed. You got 4 correct!
You'll get there, I did (eventually)

The answer is, of course, green.

If one is really interested in math, check out The " Trachtenberg " system of mental math shortcuts... Devised by a Russian engineer while in a German prison camp and with no access to paper or pen... REALLY interesting ways to take mental shortcuts. I use some of it ALL the time; amazes people.

Although I was OK with math at school, I absolutely hated it. And now, in the twilight of my years, I can honestly say, nothings changed! Lol. Have a great day guys,
Ray.

Prob. is Ray, that WAY too much emphasis in school was based on MEMORIZING formulas and getting the correct answers... RELATIONSHIPS between things are what's important, but a lot of teachers miss the mark on that. I guess that is why I always liked Geometry... You could actually visualize what you were doing.

1 = 1^9
2 = -1 + sqrt(9)
3 = sqrt(9)^1
4 = sqrt(9)+1
5 = [sqrt(9)]!-1
6 = [sqrt(9)]!*1
7 = [sqrt(9)]!+1

Looks good to me - well done! my solution for 3 was sqrt of 9 times 1. Factorial is the key. Did you see my six's puzzle post?

I enjoy math puzzles like this one. Thanks for posting.

No I didn’t see your previous posts but I’ll go back and look.
