A Straight Portrait

Most here will know I seldom do straight anything, and portraits are seldom my aim. This time however I was shooting locally with a group I'd not been with before and found the model was most suited to this type of shot (rather than for my composite components stock). Any critique is welcome but I'm interested to know which crop works best for you.

...first impression looking at #1 was I didn't like the reverse bokeh, then I saw #2 and it worked!

Yes, I agree, it needs the close-up view. Thanks for commenting.

Worth zooming in on.

I prefer the tighter crop myself RG, it’s what it requires I think. If I were really into the style I’d also do a bit of frequency separation to improve the young ladies forehead - I don’t think she requires anything else. Thanks for your comment.

Well said
And magnetoman, what magic did you perform on the filter... Crisco, Vasoline or WD-40.
OK, I am thru guessing...how??

I am going to go against the tide. I prefer #1. To my eye more mystical, since you are seeing a bit more of her. Perhaps entering from an otherworld. But either one, not bad for a person who doesn’t do a lot of portraits.

Don, it was simply the light, a Canon 70-200 @2.8 and focus on the eye. Then in pp, reduce yellow on the face using a curves layer in Ps, add the merest touch of red the same way, brighten and sharpen the eyes to taste using a high pass filter and Bob’s your uncle. You know my usual sort of people and will understand this isn’t my type of model, but this shot I do like and is my favourite from the shoot. Thanks for looking-in.

So? She was shot thru more forward vegetation, perhaps we could use thin fabric with a hole, and the DOF [wide lens, 2.8] of the lens took care of the blur/out-of-focus effect?

Yep, not your normal Bokeh effect.

Thanks Frank, but I thought you’d go for the close up!

I may have neglected to mention she had some sort of garland around her shoulders and a headdress of similar flowers! Oops! And she was under a very lovely copper beech tree!

When I first opened the post and scrolled the pictures I was intrigued by the first shot until the blue shoulder strap came into sight. IMHO it totally ruined the shot. The tighter crop on number emphasizes the model and the softness of the scene. It's kind of petty but I find the mascara on the models right eye to be distracting.

I agree on both counts Curmudgeon, blue strap and right eye - although I wasn’t sure what the black ‘flag’ actually was. I decided it was a false eyelash that had let go somehow - a sort of wardrobe malfunction of the not so serious type. You could be right though with mascara. Whatever it is it looks a bit odd.

I prefer #2. I find it has less distractions.
