Photoshop Elements 12

Weird problem has cropped up on this old, but usually reliable, program. When I download photos from a SD or CF disk, they appear quite dark. The photos are fine when viewed on the camera screen or if I xfer them to another program such as MS Photo Manager. Any ideas what's causing this?

I have an older Elements program I think it's a three. Anyway I download my photos to it and have never noticed anything different.

Ya, I know lot's of help. I've never heard of it so I'm going to stick around a bit and see what turns up

Are you talking about the thumbnails that you see when importing, or are you referring to how the images appear in the editor's workspace when selected for editing? If it's the thumbnails, it sounds like they're "greyed out", which may be happening because the importer thinks they're duplicates. That can happen when you use a camera that's had its file naming reset to zero, or if you're using two cameras that have similar file naming procedures.

These are the thumbnails and the full-screen images as you go through them one at a time. So far they've come from 2 different cameras. At first I thought it was my camera settings but that seems unlikely after viewing them in normal exposure on other programs. It may be time to acquire another editing program and give up on Photoshop.

I'm using an even older version, PSE 10, and have never experienced this problem when downloading photos to this program from either my Canon or Pentax cameras. My procedure is to remove the card from the camera and insert it in the slot on my desktop and then upload to PSE.

Interesting situation. Sounds like something is happening (different than usual) somewhere in the shoot, SD save, download to computer, open in PSE. I would rule out (or in) at each step. Since you think it may be PSE -- because it is OK in a different program -- then the trial PSE might be a good place to start. Or, if you have a disc on your current PSE you can re-install and see if anything changes. Have you made any changes to the computer lately? Can you load current PSE on another computer and test? Can you test from a different camera/SD card? I would do step by step and keep written notes. Computers will make out life easier -- heard that once and actually believed it.

Thanks, all. And, steved3604 you're probably onto something. When I updated my computer a year ago PSE and the editor side wouldn't work so I reloaded from the disk. Adobe told me it had been installed it too many times (editor) but the organizer did load. Looks like I'll have to do the trial and then pay the subscription. Tried to avoid that.

PS Elements is still a one-time purchase. Version 2022 is around $99 right now.

The link is in one of the earlier responses.

IIRC Adobe keeps track of when and where the "disc" type of software is used/installed. Maybe why they said "too many" times is because, in their records, it is on "too many" computers. I have always gone into Adobe (please don't ask me how) and taken PSE off my computer (computers), and Adobe's records and then put it back on one of my computers and Adobe's records. Again, IIRC, you only get a certain number of installs/computers and if you don't take the software "off the computer" in their records it gets to be "too many." (Even though it maybe the same computer) So, suggestion, wait on hold and get someone at Adobe to "straighten out" your records of installation. Then see if it is "too many." Just a thought from someone (that happens to be older) that had to learn about computers --because "computers will make our life easier".
