Thinking about adding this to my collection. Looking for feedback from those who know. If having a fixed f11 a problem??
Theres no DoF at f/11 and acoarst you cant increase it. Whether thaz actually a problem is your call. I rarely use my f/11 cat becuz of its limitations ... but its there when I need it.

Other than being on the slow side? If you want a long lens for use in good light? Great price? The 5.6 version's price is measured in thousands of dollars rather than hundreds, so only you know best what it's worth to you.

Do a search on YouTube.... There are a lot of rather in depth reviews of the lens there.

I did check you tube and i don't do a lot of bird work in bright light. Will hold out for a rf 100-500 f4
I had both lenses and rarely used the 800mm. I kept going with the rf 100-500 with the 1.4 tc. Works out to 700mm. I started to feel the 800mm was redundant considering the limitations with the f11. Just sold it on eBay. Now if they'll get the R7 going I'll be happy! Also with the R6 and ibis and the is in the lens I no longer lug a tripod around.
I would never buy a fixed f11. However, I saw some absolutely great pictures posted on UHH from someone using that lens.

We've a lady in our club who has been shooting some impressive bird shots - but I think I remember her saying the performance drops off in poor light (not unexpectedly).
I don't have a problem shooting at f/11. My 500mm lens with a 2x TC attached results in f/11 (or smaller aperture if I change it) and the resulting 1000mm lens combo has resulted in many sharp shots - see my posts from Edwin Forsythe Preserve where I used this combo hand held all day. If Nikon offered a comparable lens for $1,000 I'd get it without hesitation.

I shoot with a lot of folks in Florida Wetlands, some have the Canon 800mm f11 lens. IT IS NOT LIGHT. IT IS NOT THAT HEAVY. Easy to shoot hand held, takes a sharp image (should at f11 minimum).
Can include sharp backgrounds for birds in flight, try to avoid this by shooting as close to the subject as you can and try to keep backgrounds as far back from the subject as possible.
Shooting birds up in the sky with no background other than just sky should be fine.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end, even though it's with Canon.

I had a chance to pick a used one up. I felt it was worth a chance at the $750 price. The R5 seems to negate many of limitations of the lens. The rest is up to you, personally some shots amaze me, and some I screw up, but thats a learning curve. At least I have 800 mm (1120 if I get the extender) also and am taking shots I wouldn’t have tried.
I have the RF 600 f11 and I have not had an issue with the fstop 11 limitation. I just use it when the sun is high in the sky so to speak.
