Luxembourg, Europe
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a very small country in Europe, bounded by France, Germany, and Belgium. It is essentially a single city with some surrounding land. The official language is Luxembourgish, but German, French, and English (among others) are also found. The original community was founded in 963 based on Roman fortifications. Over the centuries, Luxembourg has supplied four Holy Roman Emperors! In 1354, Charles IV elevated the county to the Duchy of Luxembourg, and it has been known as that ever since.
Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union, and a part of NATO. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, governed as a representative democracy, headed by a Grand Duke constitutional monarch.
Luxembourgish, the national language, is a Franconian tongue related to High German, with many words of the French language as well. It is spoken by perhaps 600,000 persons worldwide (mostly in Luxembourg). It has been estimated that about 87% of the population is Catholic, with many other religions making up the remainder.
Enough talk, now for the pictures.
