I was just given a nice Canon EOS 650

My sons Mother in law just gave me a well cared for Canon EOS 650 with a 50mm f1.8 EF lens. I cleaned it up put in a battery and roll of film and took 6 random shots. It sounded great and focused well. I will finish the roll and develop later. The EOS 650 is Canon’s first EOS camera that was released on their 50th anniversary March 2 1987. The EOS 650 was also the camera that took the first picture posted on the World Wide Web. I’m a dedicated Nikon user and have used Canons in the film days (A1, AE1,AE1 program)but I do have a large camera collection ranging from my first camera Lica M2 from 1960 to some very large, large format to miniature cameras all brands and a few 35mm and 110 toy cameras (54 Nikons and 8 Canon’s). This is a welcomed addition to my collection.

Today, we have to qualify the 'first EOS' as the first EOS film camera. The metal mount original EF 50mm f/1.8 is a collector's item. I use mine still regularly and the results from f/2.8 onward are comparable to any newer 50mm lens. Note that all of the EF lenses can mount and operate on this body, including the IS-enabled releases that give many new options / situations for shooting film.

I wish I had kept all my cameras to put on a display shelf. Instead, I recycled gear I stopped using to keep the clutter down.

When the 650 came out there was very soon its fraternal twin, the 620. A brace of 620s quickly became my everyday 35mm work cameras.

The only difference was the 620 had a faster shutter plus a remote terminal (both important to me). They were otherwise identical. In their day they were as near to a perfect SLR as you could get. As more advanced models followed, I adopted a few, but the 620s remained the everyday mules !

My very first real camera after 110 film. I still have my 650. It is a wonderful camera.

I bought an EOS 650 new in 1987. Use it for several years.

I bought my EOS 650 new with a 35-135mm f4-5.6 Ultrasonic Lens, silent motor and Quartz Date Back. I still have it sitting on a shelf as a decoration, have no idea whether it works, I don't think so. My first Canon! Cost about $1,000 with lens, an enormous expense for me in 1987!

I bought a 650 when they first hit the shelves. Moved to digital in 2013 and haven't used it since.........until about 3 weeks ago. I figured I've been learning about exposure and wanted to try what I've learned with film.
