Winchester, UK – the Winchester Cathedral

In 1980, while stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany by USAF, I took a coach tour of Great Britain & the Benelux countries. One of the sites visited was the Winchester Cathedral at Winchester, UK. I took photos both outside and inside this beautiful old cathedral, and a few of them are shown here. (Don't be too critical--these were scanned from Ektachrome slides with a cheap scanner years after they were taken, and have some post processing.)

Thank you. The quality is not my usual standard, but I didn't see many posts about this cathedral.

Very nice. I was there in 1974 and took pretty much the same photos.

There was actually a song titled "Winchester Cathedral" by a British band called "The New Vaudeville Band", released In 1966. It was obviously an insprinational location!

mvetrano2 , I don't think I've seen you before--thanks for coming, and the nice comment. I suspect that inside cathedrals a lot of folks pretty much shoot the same pictures.

Ray (KindaSpikey), I have heard that song and did think about it. It was popular a long time ago.

Jay (jaymatt), thank you very much. I wish the quality had been better, but did what I could with them.

Excellent series, David. I could hear the New Vaudeville Band playing in the back of my mind while inscrolled through the images. I sympathize with you in scanning old Ektachrome slides - I don’t remember the splotchy texture you see in the shadows showing up when they were fresh and projected on the screen, but I’ve seen it in some of my old slides.

J_SPEIGHT, thanks for coming. I'm glad you enjoyed them, even though they weren't particularly good photos.

Hi, StanMac. I appreciate your nice comment. I agree that they photos aren't too good. They were scanned some years ago with a cheap scanner and I've done what I could to PP them with Lightroom.

Great photos of Winchester Cathedral. They do show their age but at least you have those photos. I have lost many photos through the years from that time period.

I looked up the song, Winchester Cathedral, and found,

What artists have covered Winchester Cathedral?
Artists to cover this song include Petula Clark, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Conniff, Frank Sinatra and Lawrence Welk. Stephens was inspired to write this song after staring at a picture of Winchester Cathedral on his calendar. This won the 1966 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Recording.

I arrived in Vietnam in 1966 and have to say I was in good company back then with Petula Clark as well as Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Band.

Earnest, I'm pleased you enjoyed my photos. Thanks very much.

Dennis, I appreciate your nice comment. I don't remember much about the song, but I do remember having heard it.

Thanks for posting that series. Whenever I see examples of what our ancestors built it reminds me that present day engineers and artisans don't have much on those of the past.

Very nice series, but now I can't get that song out of my head.
