I enjoy the game a lot. It is a fun 2-3 minutes. Think, drove and plums will test 15 of 26 letters in the first 3 tries. Crane is supposedly the best first word guess however. Once played, you can employ the Wordlebot, also on the nytimes site, to see a critique of your choices.

I'm just going to suggest that "raise" tests one more vowel than "crane" and the letter S is more common than the C. Having said that, I should probably give crane a try. I like testing for N.

I getting the feeling we are starting to beat a dead horse on choice of first word. Truth be known, the odds of solving the puzzle in two choices are extremely low so it's the first two words that give you the best chance of solving the puzzle in the minimum number of words. Also identifying all the vowels used isn't necessarily the best strategy. Identifying the most commonly used vowels and consonants is the goal to reduce the number of follow-on choices. My choices of CLONE, TRASH and IMPLY check 14 of the 26 letters. I'm sure there are other combinations that do similar things. These choices make possible the use of consonant-heavy words Like BUDGE, etc. to identify the missing letters.

I have two favorites: aside and adieu. Adieu eliminates four vowels quickly Second word, depending on results of first word, is often Story. That gets all the vowels out of the way.

I do the same with 'raise' and then 'youth' and it tests some very good consonants along the way.

As posted previously, I use AUDIO and PESTY as the first 2 words--they have all 6 vowels and no repeated consonants. I often use words with "R" and "N" or "CH" as the 3rd choice based on the results of the first 2. I have had very good success with that method.

My girlfriends husband got it in one try. Absolutely random luck. So many variables. My husband had the ending "atch" on the 2nd try. he used 2. hatch, 3. match, 4. catch, 5. latch, 6. patch. He lost, it was watch.

Viewer Alert! Viewer Alert! I know that we hoggers are an honorable group of people but perhaps you have some acquaintenances who are ethically challenged. Sometimes these people make some amazing guesses by solving a puzzle on the next try while only knowing two letters both in the wrong position. Here's how they might do it. If you are playing wordle (or quardle, etc) on your laptop, you can email the game to yourself and then open the game again on another device like your phone or pad. These devices are not synched so essentially you are playing the same game on two different devices and get independent guesses at the words. You get double the number of attempts to solve the puzzle. Take your SWAGs on one device and when you get some good hits, make the same choice the other device.

I'm sure that our group would never stoop to useing tactics like this but in-laws who brag about how easy the game is just might.
