I wonder if things may change by October.

Thanks for the heads up on the Island Explorer.
Last October there were SO many people in line for the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, we skipped it.

Also the big cruise ships are back in Bar Harbor this year at a pre-pandemic schedule (at least so far), although some are predicting that the ships will not be as filled with passengers as in the past.

In 2021 it was reportedly the sixth most visited national park in the system, and attracted a record-setting 4.1 million visitors.

I've driven to the top of Cadillac Mountain several times but never needed a "vehicle reservation". Is that something new?

For anyone interested in a guide book I can recommend two.

First, for photography in and around the park I think the best is https://amazon.com/Photographing-Acadia-National-Park-Essential/dp/0998785717/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1HC24ROFV31KW&keywords=miniuk&qid=1650641747&sprefix=minik%2Caps%2C78&sr=8-2 The author was artist-in-residence at the park for two seasons. Be sure you get the 2nd edition from 2021.

As a general guide to visiting the park, Mount Desert Island and the surrounding area my recommendation is https://www.amazon.com/Acadia-Complete-National-Desert-Island/dp/1940754313/ref=sr_1_1?crid=AWM9VAD5MMMF&keywords=kaiser+acadia+guide&qid=1650644874&s=books&sprefix=kaiser+acadia+guide%2Cstripbooks%2C55&sr=1-1 The author is a local who really knows the area, and is also an accomplished photographer.

In addition, if you are interested in a workshop or private tour, I can recommend John Putnam, who lives, works and has a gallery on the island in Southwest Harbor. John is an outstanding, nationally recognized instructor in nature and landscape photography.

Reservations to drive a car to the Cadillac summit are now required and can be obtained on line at:

https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/400000/ticket/4002 for daytime and evening hours

https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/400000/ticket/4001 for sunrise visits

If you aren't successful making a reservation in advance, try early on the day you want to get to the summit as some slots are held back and released each morning.

The Island Explorer does not run to the summit, but there are two private tour operators who include that on their itinerary.

This thread illustrates why UHH is such a good forum; one finds about not only places, but how to achieve some successful photography while at a destination. One can Google and Google, but responses here often get right to the point.

For those concerned about crowds there is the section of ANP on the mainland on the Schoodic Peninsula which has spectacular scenery and is far less crowded than the parts on Mount Desert Island. Even on MDI the portions of the park on the "Quietside," i.e., Southwest Harbor, Tremont and Bass Harbor, tend to be less crowded than the Ocean Drive part. (But watch out for the iconic Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.)

And there is also the part on Isle au Haut, linked to the mainland only by passenger ferry from Stonington. Even I've not been there yet!

Travel to Canada via the high-speed passenger and vehicle ferry between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia has also resumed. The trip takes about 3.5 hours each way.
