I am thinking about upgrading from my Canon SL3 to the Canon 90D and have two questions. First, is the 90D a good choice, and two, any suggestions for other options. My main interest is in sports photography of my grandchildren, etc. Thanks

The 90D is a good choice until Canon makes a APSC mirror less ......

I have gone to the Sony RX10 IV and very happy ! 8-)

I have a 90D which gets relatively little use except macro and tripod because those 32.5MP tiny pixels are so motion blur sensitive. I prefer my 7DII or 80D for carrying and if in a blind where my little birds are close I use my 5DIV.

But I do a lot of little birds where the lighting is often iffy and prevents very high shutter speeds.
As to hand holding, now at 76 and pretty much a lounge chair potato I am not a human tripod.

If the grandkids sports are outdoor and daytime that is one thing. If indoors or night (like football) under lights a better choice would be a full frame with big pixels that perform better in dim light.

I am waiting for the rumored R7 (waited for the rumored 7DIII before but it looks like that is out and the R7 is in).
And the lens will be even more important than the body, an f/2.8 to f/4 for sports under lights.

My number one lens for out and about is the 100-400L mk2 with the 70-300L in second place when I want to save weight and can get closer. I have 1.4x extenders for both.

You are welcome.

When I can use a high enough shutter speed or a really steady tripod the 90D's image quality and especially the fine details is outstanding due to having the highest pixel density of any DSLR on the market that I have heard of.

Just what I wanted to hear. My focus is on grandchildren outside sports.

The EOS 90D offers Canon's final updates for APS-C autofocus updates in the highest megapixel sensor and frames-per-second bursts DSLR. There's been many comments about having difficulty with this high(er) megapixel body. See the 24MP options of the EOS 80D or the final 'Rebel' T8i that is about as advanced as the 80D or 77D options.

It might be worthwhile to discuss the lens(es) you have / plan to use for grandchildren outside sports. Your best options are either of the Canon 100-400L zooms, where maybe a lighter / smaller camera like the current SL3 is a better option than a new camera (and new lens)?

There are many 70-300 Canon lenses. The only one I'd recommend for a sport / action situation is the final EF 70-300 IS II, about $500 new. The crop factor makes this lens useful for mid-field outdoor sports. The next logical options are the 100-400L's mentioned earlier.

Thanks. I really appreciate your thoughts since I am just learning about what it takes to take memorizable photos of my grandkids

Glad to help. Your EOS SL3 is more than capable for outstanding sports photography, producing 24MP image files at a max 5 frames/sec. You'll need some practice in the shooting settings, following the action and using a 1- to 3-second burst at just the right points. You can blow a lot of money on professional equipment and still not really do any better, especially in well-lit outdoor sports. The proper name for the lens earlier is Canon EF Telephoto Zoom 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6 IS II USM. I've seen it on sale around $500, but not today when I did a quick scan and the prices are consistent at $599. This longer lens is for the on-field action. Your 18-55 or 18-135 lens is great for the team around the coach and similar closer images on the wider end.

Out of all the cameras I have owned the Canon 90d was by far the worse for motion images for me. Even with the wonderful Canon 100-400 mm lens (II) my keeper rate went down down down for anything moving which was problem since I do birds and wildlife. For stills it was fine. Nice color and contrast.
Fast forward- I kept the camera for much longer than I should have but finally replaced it after about a year with the Canon R6 and Canon 100-500 mm R lens. Day and Night difference!
There have been so many public complaints about the Canon 90d although some seemed to have found work around solutions for its focus issues. Proceed carefully.

I've had the Canon 90d for a couple years now. At first I was having quite a hard time with soft focus. Then when I took everyone's advice and updated my choice of lens it has become a marvelous camera. (I have the Sigma 24-105 pro and the Canon 100-400 II) What I would tell you is if you do purchase it please remember it requires quite a higher shutter speed than some of the other cameras due to the high pixel count. You can always check out the Facebook group "Canon 90D Owners By Michael The Maven" for advise and photos. ;-)
