I think that this is a golden Orb Spider. Taken in local botanical garden, in natural light, 100-mm macro lens, 1/1250-sec at f/9.
Critique as usual and don't hold back. Many thanks, Brian

This is definitely a Golden Silk Orbweaver, but I cannot ID exact specie from several in the family:

Hi Nikonian72, thank you for your confirmation. As to the specie, I found this Identification guide on http://www.australiamuseum.net.au and hope this helps.

Identification
Golden Orb Weaving Spiders are large spiders with silvery-grey to plum coloured bodies and brown-black, often yellow banded legs. The males are tiny and red-brown to brown in colour. The main difference between the common Sydney species, Nephila plumipes and N. edulis (which is commoner in inland regions) is the presence of a 'knob' on the front of the sternum (the heart shaped plate on the underside of the body between the legs) of N. plumipes.

Considering that I live on the coast, although 1,000 km north of Sydney, I think that this is possibly the N. plumipes ? Brian

Hi Erv, I know, but this time it might just possibly help Nikonian to identify the specie. Let's see what he has to say. ;)

Nice going...Think if you shifted your position slightly would have been able to make the background less distracting.

Coastal Golden Orbweaver (Nephila plumipes): http://www.findaspider.org.au/find/spiders/110.htm

Common Golden Orbweaver (Nephila edulis): http://www.findaspider.org.au/find/spiders/116.htm

Northern (giant) Golden Orbweaver (Nephila pilipes): http://www.findaspider.org.au/find/spiders/188.htm

I am leaning towards Nephila edulis.
