Jim, knowing how Nikon makes the glass for their lenses and how they combine lens elements, my question would be why?

In fact, I question why people purchase a top-of-the-line Nikon and then opt for inferior non-OEM lenses.

I want a wider lens and I heard the Rokinon 14 mm 2.8 makes a sharp wide angle, using a d610 nikon cam.

Fair enough. In the end, it comes down to what makes the photographer happy.

Are you doing high end interior work/landscapes or plan on selling astro images ?? - the only reason for doing your trade IMO.

I'd take the 70-300 Nikon lens, say "Thank you," and leave. The 70-300 can be a "walkaround" lens; the 14mm, while fun for lots of things is a single purpose lens. If you love it, skip a couple of lunches and buy the 14mm without trading anything in.

This is probably 70-300 DX lens if they offered so little for it.

It's an apples to orange comparison. Neither is outstanding in its range, and they are intended for different purposes. From the prices listed it appears MPB values the Nikon more. However if the zoom is not serving you and you want to explore WA, this is an inexpensive way to do it.

Keep the 70-300 and save for the $310 Nikon 10-20 DX.

You will end up much happier.

Why would you assume that? He has stated he is shooting a D610...full frame.

You need to make up your mind, you say it is "fun for lots of things" and then say it is a "single purpose lens".

I have the same camera as the OP and am planning on buying the same Rokinon lens. I used to shoot with a Sigma 15-30 zoom on my F100 and shots with an ultra wide can offer a spectacular perspective on many different types of shots. It's not just a lens for architectural, landscape or astro photography although those are some uses.

Sorry, I don't follow your thought and decision process. The question you are posing is a lot like I have an older F250 long bed pickup truck, and the dealer is offering me a deal on a Mini Cooper S in excellent condition - but it will cost me $2000 out of pocket. Which is the better vehicle?

Without knowing more about how you currently use the 70-300 and how you would plan to use the 14mm, or if you have any other lenses that have similar focal lengths, what camera body you are using or plan to be using it on, etc - it is absolutely impossible to guess what you are actually thinking about on this one. Both lenses are capable of producing excellent images as long as you are using them within their limitations - and all lenses have limitations - starting with focal length.
