I picked up my D7200 with an 18-140 3.5-5.6 ER VD lens on it. I took a couple of photos that were good, then I noticed the ring just in front of the knurled barrel (the stop at 18mm) had come loose. I have NEVER dropped this lens and could not figure out how it was loose. I looked at the ring with a flashlight and nothing looked wrong with it, so I just snapped it back on.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening? it stopped about 20mm. now it is ok. Another question might be, what is the ring for?

I can't help with your question but if your lens really has VD perhaps you should take it to the ER and get it a shot of penicillin.

I assumed that...just having a little fun. I am also typing on my phone.
Mine did the same thing. I like you snapped it back on and I haven't had any further issues. Scared me at first. No ideas on an answer

All this talk of VD and loose rings makes me wonder if I'm on the wrong forum!!

Bad enough VD can lead to ED

Mine literally fell to pieces a few years ago...I had an old Minolta lens that I don't use so I took the grip off it and luckily it fitted nice and tight and the right length on the 18-140mm.
I carefully glued the retaining ring back on. From memory, I had the rubber grip on my 18-105 do the same thing...

Scared me to. I thought someone had picked out up and messed with it at first so but no one has been here.
