Okay, I admit I am stumped.
According to the specs, this camera should be able to focus down to 3.28"(at the 200MM equivalent) - and yet I cannot get mine to do so. Now, at the 24MM equivalent setting, the lens does focus down to a bit more than 3" (as the spec shows), but the closest it will focus at the 200MM length is about 3 feet, give or take.
I've done searches (including here on UHH), scoured the manual, and looked at all of the menu items I can find, all for naught.
Am I missing something here?
TIA

According to B&H, what you are seeing is correct, at the telephoto range (which would be 200mm equivalent), it can only focus at 3.3 feet. When using wide, you can focus at 3.2 inches.
Aha! And here I thought it was down to 3.2 inches...just misread the specs I guess.
D'Oh!
Thanks!
I bought this camera at B&H and have had a lot of trouble getting it to do the things it is supposed to do. The online manual of over 600 pages is not helpful and several books that I bought help some. I have too much time and money invested in this camera to return it. But I would not buy it again. Sony can do much better with manuals and helping people learn this very complicated camera. They also charge $150 to get a PDF version of the online manual. I would never again buy a Sony camera
Yep f8lee, another argument for using the metric system. Zimbabwe is converting to metric, so USA's imperial system, changing with each new British King's Thumb, stands alone like the smelly Limburger Cheese on Ol' McDonald's Farm; from, The Farmer in the Dell:
https://thewordcounter.com/what-does-the-cheese-stands-alone-mean/My sympathies with you f8lee, as our eyesight "matures" the ' and the " for feet ' and inches " can easily be confused, but cm and M are distinctly different.
8 cm to infinity
1 M to infinity

The PDF download is free, not $600. You can either print it or view it.
Look at it this way...if a camera company had a 200mm lens out there that could focus 3" away...EVERYONE would have one.
I like mine. Steep learning curve, sure, especially since I’m otherwise a Nikon shooter. Have the pdf on my computer and phone and if I can ever figure out how to print 4 pages each side per sheet double sided, I’d make a hard copy.
I have the RX100VII and love this little camera. I have not experienced any issues with it getting it to do any of the things it can do. There are some I don’t use, though. I agree that the Sony manual is difficult and not easy to use. I got Gary Friedman’s book on the camera, and he clearly and logically explains everything about the camera. The book doesn’t just list the features and what they are used for, but also lays out why and how. As for the complicated menu everyone seems to hate, all it takes is spending some time playing with it to figure it out. It’s actually quite logically laid out. It’s length because of all the features this camera has. My RX100VII has functioned flawlessly now for over two years.
Love mine, small enough to always have it handy.
All I shoot now, love it!

You have to cheat a bit to do closeups at 200mm with the RX100VII. This one was done using the Raynox 150 on the front of the lens, and the ruler is in cm. Note: I have the adapter to allow lens filters to be used, and the Raynox 150, which is +4.8 diopters, fits onto that adapter.
The attached image was at about 7.9" (which is the focus distance of this closeup lens).
