The steps go up from the lower left of the photo. It is a staircase with a solid banister so of course you can't see the steps.

I can also tell you why 99% of all spiral staircases are the same direction as this one.

That can happen to anyone at any time. Try squinting your eyes almost shut and get close to your monitor. That might help. Another thing that might help is to convince yourself that you are looking UP, not down or horizontally. Also try to imagine the steps at the bottom left and follow them up with your eyes.
