I have about 200 pictures of an event on Picassa on my computer and want to know is it better to put them on a cd or dvd ? These would be presents for event participants. Thanks jerry

Neither. Put them on flash drives or make them accessible on line. I don’t think most people have a way to read cds anymore.

It shouldn't matter. The main difference is the amount of space you have. I have used both myself, if the photos are 720 MB or less.
I put them on a CD. You can put up to, I believe, 4.3 GB on a standard DVD.

Many newer computers do not have DVD/CD drives so you may be giving them something they can't use.

No real difference.
If you put them on either media some people don't have applications to do slide shows etc.
Oening the photo lab I found that putting customer photos on DVD people expected to be able to play then on their DVD. That wasn't always the case. Of course, in this day and age, most DVD player will have a slide show feature.

I agree with others, flash drive or put them on-line with sharing available. FB had albums you could post and share with family only etc.

the biggest mistake computer manufactures have ever made, is not leaving dvd drives in their computers.

It gives you an opportunity to add a BluRay/MDisk drive (which will also play and record CDs &DVDs) which has a decent capacity (50 GB disks) and is actually useful for long term archiving of data/images. MDisks are the most robust archive media available today.

Neither.

I have not owned a computer with an optical reader for over 10 years. My Blue Ray player is somewhere in the garage.. I think. Good riddance to that ancient technology.

I would not recommend CD/DVDs.

(1) new computers don't read them without adding an external device.

(2) commercially produced CD/DVDs are made by pressing a pattern into the plastic disk, then coating it with metal, then applying a protective coating. Home-burnt CD/DVDs are produced by burning holes in a layer of some organic material in the disk. The organic material is subject to degradation with time, which the metal coating of the commercial CD/DVD is more resistant to. So the useful lifetime of a home-burnt disk is shorter than the commercially produced disk. There are, of course, different grades of disks for home production but they are not well labelled for that.

A flash drive will probably hold the photos for a longer period of time than the home-burnt CD/DVD, but flash drives are really useful for short-term storage. Great for sharing digital data. But the end recipient will be well advised to transfer the contents to their usual media structure (probably HDD/SSD) which is integrated into their backup system. After that, there is a free flash drive to share something else with someone else. And that way the end recipient has the photos backed up.
