World Backup Day (according to B&H)

B&H has declared today "World Backup Day" and as such, they have some pretty good sale prices on everything from hard drives to storage cards to USB thumb drives.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/dealZone.jsp

I just wanted to share, since I see a lot of threads around storage, this might be a good time to pick up a replacement drive, or add to the SD (or other format) card collection. I just got a GoPro 10 for my upcoming vacation, I might get a few extra MicroSD cards.

THE WORLD BACKUP DAY PLEDGE

“I solemnly swear to backup my important documents and precious memories on March 31st.”...

But since media are important to backup, a B&H sale is worth looking at.

Sandisk Extreme U3 cards at 32GB seem to be a sweet spot for all that I do. Amazon is selling them for $10!

B&H too!

Some cameras though require a 64gb card to utilize their exFAT file capacity.

I guess none of mine are new enough for that!

So what happens if you plug in a 32 GB card formatted in FAT32 or for that matter ExFAT? Never heard of any device having an issue with a file/folder under the max capacity of the FS, only over it. Please publish a link so I can understand…

The issue primarily applies to shooting video, since cards of 32GB or less use the FAT32 file system, which is limited to a 4GB file size. But I suppose the issue could also arise with an in-camera panorama using today's mega-pixel sensors. Cards of 64GB or more are not so limited and can be formatted using ExFAT (and will be by today's cameras) which will allow files larger than 4GB. BTW a 32GB card cannot be formatted to use the exFAT file system.

I’d recommend only using SDXC cards and not SDHC. 32GB cards and smaller are SDHC and use the FAT32 file system. If you shoot video with a SDHC card your files will be split into 4GB chunks which creates extra work in post production.

Thanks. Now I understand your statement. To clarify, the camera will accept a 32GB card with the FAT32 FS, but with the usual 4GB max file size limitation (which is inconvenient for video). I didn’t read your initial statement that way.

Cheers

BTW I don't pretend to be an expert in the arcane science of in-camera storage media! For that see the Alpha Shooters article cited above.

Nor for formulating a reliable backup plan. Here's a concise and flexible plan:

I also posted a thread 2 days ago under "Links and Resources" about World Backup Day 2022!

I even ordered two 14 TB external hard drives which should arrive today!

Be well! Ed

I shoot a lot of video but most of my short clips are intended to be edited into longer videos. So, the 4G limit only bit me when I was shooting something like an interview. The the 4GB limit was a PITA that needed work in post.

Thanks to you I may have a better solution! I am going to test my cameras and see what they might be able to do.
